Eric Serra

Grand Sound for Le Grand Bleu

Eric Serra: Le Grand Bleu Ciné Concert, La Seine Musicale, Boulgne-Billancourt, France

For two special nights, at La Seine Musicale, a cine concert celebrating the 30th anniversary of Luc Besson’s blockbuster 1988 cult film, Le Grand Bleu (The Big Blue), was presented in L-ISA Immersive Hyperreal Sound. The mesmerizing score was performed live by its composer Eric Serra and a group of musicians specially chosen for the event, with L-Acoustics L-ISA technology captivating audience members.

Starring Jean-Marc Barr, Jean Reno, and Rosanna Arquette, the epic feature film was inspired by the lives and storied rivalry of two famous free diving champions, Jacques Mayol (Barr) and Enzo Molinari (Reno). Shot on location in the South of France, the Greek islands, Peru and Sicily, the film features stunning underwater photography and emotional intensity underscored by Serra’s hypnotic, ambient soundtrack, which won the César for Best Music in 1989, France’s highest honor for film scoring. With such an evocative score and beloved film, it required the right sound system to administer a remarkable experience for the event attendees.

After traveling to the LISA headquarters in London to meet with LAcoustics founder and President Christian Heil to demonstrate the LISA technology, Serra decided that LISA Immersive Hyperreal Sound was the proper means to deliver his vision for the Le Grand Bleu concert. When talking about L-ISA, Serra said, “I think this is the future of sound. Once you’ve heard this kind of sound at a concert, if you go back to the previous sound system, it won’t feel as good.

When talking about the show experience, Serra exclaimed, “I’ve done many concerts in my life, and it’s the first time I have had so much feedback about the sound. All my friends—not the musicians—I’m talking about friends that are not into music! That’s one of the first things they said, the sound was really amazing—incredible!”
